CONJUNCTION IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR 

Definition- A conjunction is a word that joins two sentences and sometimes two words. Ex-and, or,but, because,so,either….or, neither…nor, for,since,also etc.

  • Rohit is an intelligent boy and Monu is a lazy boy.
  • He is not smart but he is honest.
  • Two and two make four.
  • Is he asleep or awake?
(Conjunction is also known as sentence connectors)
 
Kinds of Conjunction-
1. Co-ordinate Conjunction– Joins sentences in equal rank.
( independent statement)
 And – और
But –  लेकिन
Or –  या
Nor -नहीं
Either …or- या तो यह या तो वह
Neither …nor -ना तो यह ना तो वह
Still -अभी तक
even -भी
Too -भी
As well – भी
Also- भी
 
Example-
 Birds fly and fishes swim.
Rama and Shyam are coming.
You should help or he will die.
I went but he was not there 
He was too weak.
She will also come here 
You may go but I will stay.
I ran fast but I missed the train.
I went to the shop and bought a pen.
 
2. Sub-ordinate conjunction– The sentences contain two statements, one is dependent on the other through these connectors. ex – 
After – बाद में
Before – पहले
Because – क्योंकि, इसलिए
If  -यदि
That-  की
Though – यद्यपि
Although-  यद्यपि
Till – तक
Until – जब तक नहीं/जब तक
Unless  -जब तक
As  – क्योंकि / जैसे कि
When  -जब/ कब
Where  – जहां/ कहा
How – कैसे
While – जब तक
Since -जब से / क्योंकी
Than  – comperision  (तुलना करना)
So- इसलिए
 
Ex-
  • I will see you before you go.
  • I returned home after the Son had set
  • Wait for her till I return
  • I have hidden it where it can not be found.
  • Don’t leave the place until I return
  • Wait until the rain stops.
  • Don’t move until I come back
  • Don’t leave till I arrive
  • Let’s wait till the train stops.
  • God made the earth while man mad town.
  • Strick the iron while it is hot.
  • I like tea while he likes coffee.
  • Do as I say.
  • She is brave as her sister.
  • Leave the book as it is.
  • Plants breathe as animals do.
  • Since she was ill, she could not go to school.
  • We have not met him since 2010.
  • Milk is more wholesome(पोष्टिक) than bread.
  • Nothing is more pleasant than climbing mountains.
  • Rashmi is mot beautiful than her sister.
  • He is taller than me.
  • I don’t know where has he gone.
  • I don’t know where he lives.
  • When I reached the station the train had left.
  • I will do it when finding the time.
  • I don’t know when he has gone.
  • Tell them that I will come.
  • When I was younger, I thought so.
  • He found his mobile where he had left it.
  • I don’t understand how it happened.
  • I know that he doesn’t think so
  • I will come if I am not ill
  • I lost the prize though I try my best.
  • He sat down because he was tired
 
 
3. Correlative conjunction-Conjunctions are used in pairs.
Either …or –  या तो यह या तो वह
Neither …nor- ना यह ना वह
Both…and  – दोनों…और
Whether …or –  चाहे या ना चाहे
Not only …but also  – ना केवल ..बल्कि 
So….that इतना… कि
As….. as
Ex-
  • He is famous not only in his state but also in his country.
  • He helped the poor not only with food but also with money.
  • He is neither good at  English nor at Hindi.
  • You are neither my friend nor my enemy.
  • He is either good at English or at Hindi
  • Both Rohit and Siddant are good
  • Both mother and father are at home.
  • Both Rita and Geeta go to school.
  • She speaks French and English
  • You can not say whether he will go or not.
  • He is so intelligent that he always wins an argument.
  • He is clever as I am.
 
4. Compound Conjunction– (two or more conjunction combine)
As well as – साथ ही साथ
As far as- जहां तक की
As soon as- जैसे ही
As if  – जैसे कि 
Provided that- वशर्तें /यदि 
So that- माना कि/ ताकि
Even if – यद्यपि 
In order that- ताकि
As though -जैसे कि
 
 
  • Example  – Write to me as soon as you receive the letter.
  • Rohit as well as Sonu was present there.
  • He looks as if tired 
  • I will do my best as far as possible.
  • I will give you a book provided that you will return it on time.
